This assignment is designed as a beginning of the year activity which combines "getting-to-know-each-other" ice breaking with critical literary analysis.
In this assignment, students will eventually end up with Soundtracks that show up as pages in Poetry Genius. Each Soundtrack consists of 8 important life events and a song that represents each one of those events.
Each track in this Soundtrack will of course also be annotated with 4 crucial pieces of information: 1) significance of the event 2) lyric from the song chosen to represent that event 3) analysis of why this song fits the event 4) a fitting picture.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's make sure we get our kids signed up for a Poetry Genius account!
Also, you may find it easier to add your class rosters to the site yourself before beginning this activity (although some teachers have the students essentially create the roster themselves by editing a blank roster).
Once students sign up, they will add their Soundtrack as a new text into Poetry Genius.
However, I found it helpful for them to fill out a chart that functions as a rough draft of their tracks and analysis:
