The best part about the music we listen to today, is that there are no creative limits. The music is not static, prescribed to one genre, but a fusion of all that inspires and grasps the artist. The ideas that go on in an artist’s mind every day are endless, a constant blend of words, sounds, and emotions, resulting in a style that the artist can call their own
DCypher Musik is the perfect example of this. Describing his sound as having “no boundaries”, his tracks reflect just this. One minute, you could be listening to a mellow catchy jam with DCypher Musik’s smooth vocals, and the next be rocking your head to his rhymes. The versatility of DCypher Musik’s work shows that taking whatever pulls you in, no matter what it is, and using it in your music, creates tracks that show who the artist is, and what they’re about
DCypher Musik has performed live countless times, making him known in Toledo, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia. On top of creating his music and performing, DCypher Musik has also engineered multiple records.m Now, DCypher Musik has set his sights on expanding his music nationally
We had a chance to talk to DCypher Musik more about his inspiration, experience, and overall thoughts on life as an artist
Who are some big influences on your music?
I have a list of 10 artists that are my “goals”, if you will. These artists, combined, represent what I wish to accomplish as DCypher Music. I have picked two artists from each of the main musical disciplines I work on the most
My piano playing is most influenced by Oscar Peterson and Thelonious Monk. My guitar playing is guided my Victor Wooten and Jimi Hendrix. My singing I am most influenced by John Legend and Stevie Wonder. I follow in the footsteps of Lupe Fiasco and Yusuf Lateef in regards to rapping. My dancing is most influenced by James Brown and Micheal Jackson
Most people would think to achieve the status of these individuals in just one of these disciplines would be a near impossible task. I just believe that I’m possible. I won’t let the mental limitations of others hinder me from achieving my goals
How would you describe your personal sound?
I describe my Musik as Millennium Sol. Millennium Sol is an idea that Musik has no boundaries. So at times my Musik sounds like hip hop, jazz, funk, blues, soul, or R&B. I will never be able to describe my sound because the listeners ears determine my sound. The idea of Millennium Sol is that it encompasses all those previous sounds and genres to allow the listeners freedom from or of description
What do you think is the number one, MOST important element to keep in mind while writing a song?
I think the most important thing to understand about writing songs that it is FOR you but not TO you. This concept means that even if you decide to write about personal subjects, it has to relate to your audience, otherwise, they won’t understand you. Knowing this helps you connect to your audience
What do you believe is one of the biggest struggles for an artist in today’s music industry, and what is something you personally struggle with an as artist?
One of the biggest struggles of artists today, I believe, is maintaining a grip on reality. I think artists these days are so concerned with “making it” they don’t take the time to live life. They live with these fantasies all day and don’t appreciate the present
This struggle is apparent because now all you see is artists promoting, promoting, promoting, instead of building connections. People don’t get ahead because others don’t feel they are genuine or sincere
Are there any “words of wisdom” that you have learned from your personal experiences in the music world?
If I had to say anything it would be, Be Yourself. I truly believe artists must express themselves to the fullest capabilities or their personal happiness will suffer. Don’t compromise your style for anyone or anything
