Sometimes we feel we have turned the last corner On our paths out of the labyrinth, when in front of us The grass maze of the world splits: Here we are Corn-fed and sufficiently disoriented. How to get back at The horizon? We have gathered two kernels of wisdom: That we must guess, and walk with a hand to the wall.     We should also ask how we all got here:   Aren't we too smart to be aimlessly Sundering this field of flora?  Isn't it funny Trapped in the sticks for five minutes,  There’s no telling how one got entangled Don't look back for   We have only one boot left and the beers  Are warm. Our vehicle’s no cooler, so stop Admiring the hedges I know, you’re thinking “If only we parted the stalks, to spy the edges Of the maze we might press    Our way out undetected Emerge scratch-free save maybe Brambles in our hair.”   Actually we need to leave Before the sun sets And some bodies get turned on   By search lamps, or else vermin Will attack the lingerers.  Nobody wants To live in a maze, and nobody wants rabies,    Take it easy, let us roll out Like maps, moments before The oasis is closed
